Platyhelminthes
Description:
Platyhelminthes literal definition is “flatworm.” Most members of the Platyhelminthes phylum have a small and flattened body. These “flatworms” can either reproduce sexually or asexually, through either fragmentation or fission.
Geographic Range:
Platyhelminthes are normally found in freshwater, as well as terrestrial habitats.
Food Habits:
Most Platyhelminthes are carnivores. Some species of the Platyhelminthes’ family are able to feed on much larger organisms. Smaller flatworms can only feed on smaller organisms.
Reproduction:
Platyhelminthes are mostly hermaphroditic, and their reproductive systems can be vary from simple to extremely complicated. Each species either have numerous testes or one to two ovaries. Female Platyhelminthes are separated into two structures: the ovaries and the vitellaria (which forms eggshell components.) Asexual reproduction occurs through fragmenting their body. Sexual reproduction occurs when the worms swap sperm.
